DON'T send Aerosol Can Products, Alcohol, Carbonated Beverages, Firearms, Flammable Items, Fruits, Live Plants. Obscene or offensive material, Pork products, Pornography, or Tobacco. (Some people still send some of these items and get away with it.)
DON'T send bulk quantities of religious materials con tray to the Islamic faith. (Items for personal use for the addressee are fine)
DON'T overstuff you package.
DON'T pack hygiene items, and food products in the same box! (Soapy cookies, EWWW)
DON'T forget no matter how you decorate the care package, or whatever you stuff it with, your service member will LOVE it!
DO use a small to mid-sized boxes. The smaller and lighter the box the faster it will arrive to its destination.
DO consider the resources your service member has around them. If there isn't time for your service member to brew coffee, or they are without a microwave for hot tea or hot cocoa, consider sending alternate resources like an electric kettle.
DO write lots and lots of letters
DO create a theme for your box.
DO include some sort of DIY project. (EX: 50 reasons why I love you or appreciate your service, Open When letters, Laminate your own kisses with clear tape, create love coupons, etc.)
DO learn how to play Tetris to maximize space!
DO shop after holiday sales
DO send favorite snacks
DO send home baked goods
DO remember that boxes are sometimes inspected throughly, depending on branch of service, and specialty.
DO make sure you tell your service member when you are sending an expensive item so they can keep a look out for it.
DO consider using USPS flat rate boxes.
DO use as much tape as possible.
DO provide accurate shipping information
DO get a custom form if you are shipping a package overseas.
DO store energy drinks, items with strong odors, or anything that might leak/melt in individual ziplock bags.
DO place stickers around the package prior to taping it up. This will allow your service member to easily identify if their box has been tampered with during transit.
